Tonhalle, mir schmeckt’s nicht

P1180373

Frankly, the Tonhalle is not a Kiosk. And actually, even the Kiosk owner close to the Hauptbahnhof have by now mastered the art of how many Ps and Cs should be in the word “cappuccino”, and if “macchiato” should be written with or without H.

That the Tonhalle puts out a poster with “Viva la Opera” makes me a bit furious because it is an institution which commands high prices – now Eur 1.50 – for its product offer. And it makes me a bit smile, because it constantly reminds me of “Maria, ihn schmeckt’s nicht!” and the attempts of speaking italian by the main character…sometimes with funny results…

Whatever, Tonhalle has an audience who is able to pronounce “Viva l’Opera” and does not need this kind of “populaer” fake Italian.

Monti? Tremonti? Egmont!

At the Tonhalle tonight it was the National Symphonic Orchestra (not the Wiener) who played Egmont but nevertheless a good way to start the week!

Petruschka!

P1020996

What a nice birthday celebration! First, loads of fresh snow…Second, a tonic trek across the bridge to the Tonhalle, looking like a pandoro…Third, the Bundesjugend Orchester performing Stravinskij’s Petrushka!

P1020968

The Tonhalle is full, people are rushing (the snow slowed down everybody this morning), there are many parents with kids…jumpers, jeans and snow boots galore.

The conductor Michael Sanderling, 100% Berliner, seems very inspiring for this orchestra of young musicians, aged 14 to 19. The BJO is currently on a tournée, on the programme Beethoven’s Egmont Ouverture, Britten ‘s Piano concert D-Dur op.13 (not an RC2 favourite, but very well executed nonetheless) and Strawinskij’s Petrushka.

P1020972

It was beautiful to see these young talents play and then hug and kiss each other after the performance!

Overall it feels like being back to my youth in Triest…when I would defy the icy bora wind for going to matinées at the Teatro Verdi, and the theater was full of young people…when culture is accessible to many it is always brings joy, to those who perform it and for the audience.

Winterzeit

Compare and contrast…glowing sun at the Tonhalle and Ehrenhof yesterday at 5pm…my trusted florist told me “buy the latest dahlias…the plants will freeze and die tonight…these are the last flowers of the year”.

And indeed, this morning’s icy fog in Oberkassel confirms us that not only w need to put our clocks one hour behind, but that the Winter is here! 🙂

And we have magazines and book galore 🙂

Deck chair time

Saturday we decided it is time for deck chairs. While we were exiting the door of the building we crossed our neighbors. Curiously enough, after 20 minutes we were at the same concession of the same garden center…looking at the same model of deck chair!

We bought our equipment for our blessed northern-facing balcony (it is a blessing, yes yes!) but we quite like to borrow Tonhalle’s yellow deckchairs and their red Fatboy cushions in the evening…
