Concertone del Primo Maggio!!!

P1210712

First of May….in our Roman years, that meant Concertone del Primo Maggio….we could even hear the beats from our balcony, transported by the Ponentino wind….

There is a nice sunset in Dusseldorf, the sun has long set in Rome, but I am listening to La Vita Com’è by Max Gazzé…and MeinMann is just telling me…that our holiday in Puglia is booked!!!

Puglia Coast to Coast, we’re ready!!!

(June…Jonio…can’t wait to see you!!!)

Leaving Trieste…my heart is bleeding.

This is normal. This is everyday. In Trieste.

I had to see Trieste

P1200955

On the 11.00 train, I am sitting opposite a 20-something Northern-European looking young man. Green and black polo, a big backpack. He cranes his neck to look at Miramare castle and the Gulf of Trieste in the background. We start a conversation.

He is Belgian. He left Belgium two days ago and travelled throughout Northern Italy by train “I had to come and see Trieste. I study literature and I simply could not keeping on postponing this. I had to see the city where Joyce, Svevo, Saba lived and worked”.

“Thank you for coming to my home town. Especially in days like these, we need to love Europe even more. You are most welcome in Trieste”.

Friday night!

P1200330

Fridays are always tough. Getting home from work, all the people about town, going out…ending their shopping…and I normally head to the Ko to capture a bit of that Feierabend mood, go to the nice food store at Ko Bogen and buy fish for Saturday lunch…but eventually I am going home and I am alone, talking to Micetta and Mimmino….

MeinMann has a thousand miles away a similar experience: shopping, preparing a cosy Yorkshire weekend ahead, on his own.

P1200346

Therefore it is so nice that after this business trip I hear a tap on my hotel room door and there he is, MeinMann, coming up from Yorkshire all the way to the Lowlands of Scotland! And off we go to sample the chilly air of Edinburgh at St Andrew’s Square, looking at the light installation, and then an informal dinner…

Business trips once were branded “loneliness”. Now they are – sometimes – branded “togetherness”…

….and you?

P1200242

I am sitting here, the train to Dusseldorf is 5min late. It’s cold, am not really happy of the delay. I had to say already “Non parlo tedesco” to a first, a second, a third, a fourth homeless guy. The last passed by asking first in German and then in good English about money while making  a gesture mimicking a bottle.

My trolley, a book. A tote bag.

A homeless woman walks past me and we exchange a glance. She smiles and starts to say something. My lunch box is still in my tote bag, two sandwiches, two apples, orange juice and a chocolate bar. It seemed untidy to leave it at the hotel reception so I had schlepped it along. “Warten Sie, ich kann Ihnen das anbieten”. I give the lunch box to the lady. She looks at it, is surprised, looks at me, she is happy, looks at the box, she is puzzled, asks me “und Sie?!”. “Kein Problem, Sie koennen alles mitnehmen”. She walks away smiling.

For some reason a woman’s instinct is always the one to wonder if you have enough food for yourself, and this lady made no exception.
