August 4th, 1972

In the current Zeitgeist, my mind went back to one Summer in 1972. I was a little girl and I remember only one thing, the fear that something may have happened to my Dad, we had no telephone in the small house where we lived for a few months in Friuli back then, and a high column of black smoke which could be seen from far away.

I am referring to the attack of Black September, just before the Munich one, to the SIOT oil tanks in Trieste. It was only by chance that a whole portion of the city did not explode. No bora that day, luckily.

Paolo Pascutto quotes that event in one of his beautiful and somewhat disturbing paintings. Probably my favorite. Here the tanks fade from Dolina down to the Adriatic, beyond Muggia and the Slovenian coast.
