Dusseldorf: schoen, reich und sexy

To compare and contrast with Berlin, “arm aber sexy”, Dusseldorf markets itself as “schoen, reich und sexy”. Urban rivalry apart, the newly inaugurated Wehrhahn underground line shows that in some things Dusseldorf does it better, like completing public transport facilities. And in a tangled, intensively built historic city center, not in the middle of the Brandenburg taiga…

Yesterday we visited and tested, excited like little kids, the new stations…as the majority of the Dusseldorfers! The day was sunny and beautiful but excited taxpayers, like us, could not help but venturing underground and checking how some stations actually receive natural light from above ground…the line is beautiful and I am now an even happier commuter (and taxpayer).

In this photo, the brand new bouche de metro at Schadowplatz, in electric blue hues…

For sentimental reasons, my absolute favorites still remain Berlin’s U-bahn – especially line U4, my pet – and Moscow’s masterpiece. But post-war Dusseldorf ticks all the boxes, in colors and nuances which match well with the muted palette you find above ground.

All these taxes became salaries and profits for local workers, Eastern European workers and local firms. I like that!
