P1180321What’s in a locomotive?

A kind “Explainer” at NRM took us through all the mechanics and the physics of how a locomotive works. Boy, was this interesting! The beauty of it is that at the NRM they have a section of a locomotive and one can really figure out what is happening under the mighty bulky body of a locomotive. P1180320

So we learnt about the super-heated steam. And we discovered what the tubes-in-the-tubes are needed for.P1180324

And we understood how the pistons work and why in 1920s to 1940s movie you always see the conductor hitting with a long hammer somewhere near the train wheels, and vapour escapes…if water condenses in there, the engine goes completely bananas.
